My 3 School Marketing Degree Taught Me This

Three colleges in four years to learn this one thing that actually moves the needle....

MARKETING

I sat through four years of a marketing degree and walked out knowing a little bit about everything.

Business Branding.
Marketing Analytics.
Consumer behavior.
Marketing Psychology.

It all sounds useful.

But then you step into the real world and none of it matters the way you thought it would.

Because none of those classes guarantees that anything gets sold... or marketed for that matter.

What college didn’t emphasize enough:

Wasn’t product design
Wasn’t Pricing.

But Distribution.

Here’s an example:

Someone builds a great product or piece of tech.

Crickets.

Another person does the same thing but it's half as decent...
but this time this person knows how to get it in front of people.

It takes off big.

Same idea.
Same tools.
Different outcome.

The gap here isn’t intelligence. It’s distribution.sdd

Let’s make it more relatable.

You want attention.

You have everything going for you.

But you don’t post.
You don’t show up.
You’re invisible online.

Meanwhile, someone you wouldn’t even consider pretty...

Posts consistently.
Shows up daily.
Knows how to stay in front of people.

They get all the attention.

Why?

But because they understand distribution.

And a hard truth to grip with is that:

if nobody sees you, then you doesn’t exist.

I know it sounds f*ed up but that is the world we are living in today.

Everything that wins today runs on attention.
And attention only comes from distribution.

This is the only way we only know about anything that is ever trending or news worthy.
It all gets distributed through the different channels of life.

and let's get this straight

The people who win don’t always have the best ideas.

You see it constantly:

Oh that girl you went to highschool with is a influencer now.
That cousin of yours is a successful youtuber.
Your aunt started making those tiktoks and now she's a micro celebrity.

All because they consistently have a flow of distribution.

They know where attention lives.
They know to show up.
They know how to stay in front of it.

And the videos & ideas can be God Awful. I mean piss poor.
But the key difference is once people see it, they can’t unsee it.

I mean even writing that I still think about shitty posts of people that I know in IRL and despite it being AWFUL they still hold some mental real estate in my head.

so it works because i'm sure you thought of some awful cringe things you've see too.

Anyway I do wanna say that if my 3 college marketing degree can come down to one lesson it’s this:

Distribution is everything

And that’s not to discredit:

that great Ideas don’t matter.
Amazing products are pointless.
Or that execution is meaningless.

But none of that truly works if nobody sees it.

And if you understand that
Then you are closer to winning more than you know.
